D 29, 580–582 (1984)Flavor thresholds and Λ in the modified minimal-subtraction schemeReceived 30 September 1983; published in the issue dated 1 February 1984 A discussion of the modified minimal-subtraction (MS―) prescription in QCD is presented. Effects of flavor thresholds on αs(μ) and ΛMS― are examined. Two parametrization options are described. In the first approach, distinct mass scales ΛMS―(NF) associated with NF, the effective number of flavors, are introduced. In the second scheme, a standard NF-independent ΛMS― is adopted but the functional form of α(μ) is slightly modified. © 1984 The American Physical Society URL:
