Phys. Rev. D 35, 449–454 (1987)Classical derivation of black-hole entropyReceived 25 August 1986; published in the issue dated 15 January 1987 The proportionality between black-hole entropy and area is derived from the minimal assumption that black holes are classical thermodynamic objects. The relationship between the classical and quantum formulas is shown to be similar to that of blackbody radiation. Classical thermodynamics is shown to imply certain characteristics for classical waves which are normally thought to be quantum mechanical in origin. © 1987 The American Physical Society URL:
