D 42, 722–725 (1990)Berry's phase in field theoryReceived 1 February 1990; published in the issue dated 15 July 1990 By considering the effect of unitary transformations on the path integral for a gauge field interacting with a fermion over a suitable manifold, we generalize the Berry phase to field theory.
