The quantum theory of an open charged bosonic string in a magnetic background is considered. The squared mass operator is found and the mass spectrum analyzed. The spin-one spectrum manifests a peculiar behavior in the presence of the background field. One of the spin-one states is a tachyon at any nonzero field strength, while the other can be massive or tachyonic depending on the strength of the background magnetic field.
