D 56, 6284–6292 (1997)New Hamiltonians for gravityReceived 26 March 1997; published in the issue dated 15 November 1997 A generalized canonical formulation of gravity is devised for foliations of spacetime with codimension n>~1. The new formalism retains n-dimensional covariance and is especially suited to 2+2 decompositions of spacetime.
